Q: For those who don’t know you, can you please introduce yourself and describe your sound?
My name is Emma Alves. My music is something that changes and grows alongside me. The direction I'm headed in is a combination of Sabrina Claudio and Nirvana—mushed into one. R&B for fans of Kurt Cobain, if you will.
Q: What’s one of the biggest successes you’ve had as a musician?
Part of me wants to say a streaming number, as if that will give me some sort of validation as an artist. The real answer is I had a show at a bit of an underground venue in Vancouver several months ago. I wasn't sure anyone would come to see my set specifically. Especially since the bill was mainly Rock bands. I had one girl come up to me, I liked her style a lot. She mentioned that she found me online and came to the show just to see me. I think about the interaction a lot and hope she's doing well.
Q: What’s your favourite venue to play?
That's a hard question because I enjoy bouncing around to different venues. Each stage offers a unique experience that can't be replicated. (I loved playing the Rickshaw though, suuuuuuper fun crowd).
Q: What do you think was the best Medium for music to be on? (Vinyl, Tape, CD, Digital)?
Whatever medium inspires you. I wish I had a huge vinyl collection but in reality I mainly listen to Spotify in the car.
Q: Who is your favourite local band to see perform around town?
I recently saw Ahsia play and she was amazingly talented. Royal Oak, Molly Annelle, Uncle Strut, FKA Rayne, Ruin Garner and Tess Anderson are also wonderful. There is so much talent in Vancouver is hard to narrow it down.
Q: What’s coming up next for your music?
I'm working on an album that starts in one genre and ends in another. It's a challenge as the music styles are drastically different. I have faith my vision will come together though. (Any genre guesses?)
