Artist Spotlight - houseguest

Support the Scene is back with a fresh faced blog, and as always, we're ready to introduce you to some of the amazing local talent we have here, and to reacquaint you with some of your favourites.

We have such an incredible music scene here in the GVA, and there are so many amazing artists just waiting for you to check them out. So, after an intensely hot and busy summer, some of our talented local artists found time to answer a few of our questions.

Q: For those who don’t know you, can you please introduce yourself and describe your sound?

We’re an all-trans indie rock band, based on unceded Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh territories. We started playing together in early 2023 when MJ posted an ad on Lex looking for bandmates (lol). People have described our sound as "like transatlanticism-era death cab, but with a harder edge by way of 90s lilith fair bands, doused in chorus and with a sprinkling of queer punk.

Q: What’s one of the biggest successes you’ve had as a musician?

Playing Burnaby Pride and Dyke March were honestly huge for us - they were only our fifth and sixth show, so we were incredibly proud and excited to have gotten such a big opportunity so early.

Q: What’s your favourite venue to play?

We of course loved 648 Kingsway (RIP, we'll miss you); Green Auto is probably the top of the list right now. Great vibe, great staff, always a blast. I've never had a bad time at Green Auto.

Q: What do you think was the best Medium for music to be on? (Vinyl, Tape, CD, Digital)?

Beth: I miss CDs so much. I loved having a great big book of cds in the car and listening straight through records all the time.
MJ: Tape, because artifacts are cool! They’re just cool!
Rachael: Wax cylinder. J/K, CDs are pretty rad.
Cait: This is a really hard one to answer because I have multiple answers for different reasons and tallying or scoring the importance of each reason is too daunting. For quality I have to say vinyl obviously, which makes music listening a very purposeful but time consuming activity, but streaming for ease of use and enjoyment. Vinyl is too fragile a medium but in the right context its great to sit back and enjoy every note, but a digital medium is the most accessible which I think is extremely important from a DIY perspective.

Q: Who is your favourite local band to see perform around town?

?numb?dame? is a constant favourite, just phenomenal performances, fantastic people, and powerful music.

Q: What’s coming up next for your music?

We're recording a new EP RIGHT NOW (!!!) and we can't wait to have it out for folks! We're gonna be playing a couple shows in October and then putting the EP out in the very near future.
