Stashes, a rock band from the GVA area that love to blur the lines between modern and vintage rock. |
Support the Scene is back with a fresh faced blog, and as always, we're ready to introduce you to some of the amazing local talent we have here, and to reacquaint you with some of your favourites. We have such an incredible music scene here in the GVA, and there are so many amazing artists just waiting for you to check them out. So, after an intensely hot and busy summer, some of our talented local artists found time to answer a few of our questions.
Check out what Stashes had to say!

Q: For those who don’t know you, can you please introduce yourself and describe your sound? It was 2019 when brothers Sam and Ross Goldsand, and friends Simon Plant and Colin Kaeser first came together. They were rag-tag musicians at best but, after enough time, things started to take shape. They started playing riffs of their own and learning the ropes of songwriting as they went. Luckily, it’s a field without many rules and countless methods of execution.
A friend of the band, Spenny Steele, was making his own music until 2022, when he started jamming with the boys. It immediately became clear that his effortless playing and general shreddery took their sound to another level.
Stashes’ hard hitting riffs, head banging rhythms, and ear catching hooks blur the lines between modern and vintage rock. Stashes have developed a following that brings an exciting, raw, unadulterated energy to their shows. This combination of energy and pure rock gives listeners an idea of what a Black Keys and Led Zeppelin baby could sound like.
Q: What’s one of the biggest successes you’ve had as a musician?
Our biggest success would be the recording and release of our debut album “Where They Won’t Find It”. In July of 2023 we spent a week in Spenny’s parent’s basement recording and engineering this album ourselves. In the months following the recording we spent time with our producer and good friend, Jeff Pauze, who helped us mix the album and put the finishing touches on our songs. We are stoked to have had this opportunity and ability to share our music!
Q: What’s your favourite venue to play?
Our favourite venue is a tough question. We’ve been lucky to have such great fans that all our shows have been a blast! We have played at The Roxy a couple times, and it is definitely cool to have played at a place with the reputation the Roxy has! One of our favourite shows is a backyard party in the summer of 2023 where nearly 300 people attended. This show was probably the most Rock ‘n’ Roll we have had; moshing, crowd surfing, kegs and all in all a great time!
Q: What do you think was the best Medium for music to be on? (Vinyl, Tape, CD, Digital)?
Spenny: My favourite medium for music is Vinyl. I enjoy taking the time to fix a drink, pick out a record, drop the needle and listen to an album front to back. But I will say, the convenience of digital has allowed Stashes to release our music with minimal upfront costs making it accessible to people around the world. Pretty cool!
Sammy: I think tapes or CDs because it gets people to listen to entire records and not just individual songs, but is still relatively portable and can listen to it in the car etc.
Ross: Digital is super great because it’s so accessible. It’s so easy to listen to smaller local artists in seconds. But it’s hard to match that classic vinyl aura.
Simy: CD because of the ability to play it back to front without the worry of switch over and the digital distraction. The artwork may not be as strong as vinyl but it’s much stronger than digital.
Q: Who is your favourite local band to see perform around town?
Definitely Chase the Bear and The Oregon Whale!
Q: What’s coming up next for your music?
Over the next 6-8 months Stashes is taking a break from shows as a couple of our members are traveling. During this time, we hope to refresh and come up with some new material, evolving our sound. In 2025 we plan to record our second album and get back to playing some shows. Stay tuned for new music and dates in summer 2025!
