Best in Vancouver 2024 - Artist Interviews
What is "Best in Vancouver?" This is a yearly "battle of the bands" styled showcase of some of the incredibly local bands here in Vancouver. Live Acts is holding the events at The Roxy Cabaret this year, and we hope you'll check them out!
We got the chance to ask some of the artists a few questions about their thoughts on the event this year.

Q: What sound can people expect to hear when they walk into your performance?
They’re going to see and hear a band that is confident in who they are. Sharing a piece of ourselves and creating a shared experience with the audience is what we’re all about. We love performing and we think it shows.
Q: What makes you stand out from the other bands in Vancouver?
Each member of the band has their own unique musical influences that shape our sound and who we are as a band. The results make it difficult to group us into a specific genre and we really enjoy that. It’s a very unique experience for an original band to be jamming out to acid rock one moment, heavy alternative the next, then pull a 180 to power pop. So far, the audience seems to love it.
Q: What's one thing you wish you could tell a new fan listening to your music for the first time?

Q: What sound can people expect to hear when they walk into your performance? You can expect a unique blend of synths, alt-rock, and some unconventional chords. Other times, we just enjoy playing simple, fun songs. We're a mix of different personalities, so naturally, we create a mix of sounds! Our lyrics dive into topics like ADHD, saying a summer goodbye, random bus stops, anger at an ex, and everything in between.
Q: What makes you stand out from the other bands in Vancouver?
Our sound is uniquely our own, shaped by our wildly diverse musical and personal backgrounds. We pull from a love of 70's prog rock, 90's grunge, classical piano, and Turkish rock. Throw in some jazz education and years of playing together in various one-off groups ranging from pop, R&B, and folk, and you get a blend that’s distinctively us.
Q: What's one thing you wish you could tell a new fan listening to your music for the first time?

Let us introduce Ayla Bryn! Here's what she had to say!
My soft acoustic sound has evolved to incorporate more upbeat indie-pop jams while still utilizing raw emotion through carefully crafted lyrics. Expect to dance, have a good time and be amused by clever lyrics from songs such as, “Crying in my Cereal”, “My Therapist Thinks I’m Smart” and “Death of a Pessimist”.
Q: What makes you stand out from the other bands in Vancouver?
As a musician, my passion has stemmed from lyricism centered around complicated topics. Some topics include abuse, aging, one's relationship with themselves, their parents and the world. These serious songs are juxtaposed by a fun upbeat tone, adding layers of sarcasm and humility.
Q: What's one thing you wish you could tell a new fan listening to your music for the first time?
I would like to thank anyone for taking the time to listen to my music. My dream is to share my art with the world in hopes of it reaching the right audience and I am incredibly honored every time someone shares that they have been moved by my songs.

Q: Which prizes are you most excited for from the sponsors?
As a female in the industry I was very pleased to see a prize dedicated to emerging female artists. My experience in the industry has been relatively positive and yet it is still daunting as a new artist to see how male dominated the field is. In addition, I would be incredibly honored to have one of my songs produced by Emily Ryan at Raincity records.

Next up is Zombie Roof! Here's what they had to say!
Q: What sound can people expect to hear when they walk into your performance?
Zombie Roof has a sound that formed from a blend of 90’s grunge and 70’s classic rock. It’s best described as a “hard rocking sound with classic rock riffs and face melting guitar”.
Q: What makes you stand out from the other bands in Vancouver?
Zombie Roof stands out from other bands in that the music is heavily rhythmic with the roots developed from drums/bass up. The blend of male/female voices along on the new album create a unique rock sound.
Q: What's one thing you wish you could tell a new fan listening to your music for the first time?
One thing we’d like to tell a new fan is “check us out and enjoy the musical collage - Share our love for the music that shaped us”.
Q: Where can people find you (social media, etc.)?
You can find our music on ITUNES, SPOTIFY and Youtube.
Q: Which prizes are you most excited for from the sponsors?

The next band we chatted with was Arrow in the Quiver! Here's what they had to say!
Q: What sound can people expect to hear when they walk into your performance?
We bring variety of metal styles in our music, incorporated with other genres like hip hop and reggae. We try not to box ourselves into one specific style and/or genre/sub genre of metal, as it keeps our song writing a lot more open. And at the end of the day, we create songs that feels and sounds right for us.
Q: What makes you stand out from the other bands in Vancouver?
Arrow In The Quiver brings high energy. A lot of energy on stage. We also make sure that each and every single one in the audience are engaged and they feel included.
