Show Review - Hippie Death Cult
Support the Scene had the opportunity to send one of our incredibly talented photographers to see Hippie Death Cult on November 2nd, at Green Auto Music. Here's what Danielle Ravenheart had to say about the venue and the incredible performance that HDC put on.

Although I got lost on the way to the show, walking into Green Auto Music felt like entering a tight knit, cozy community. The people there were quite friendly and one of the first things I noticed was their makeshift bar, which included a fridge stacked with an array of drinks both alcoholic and non-alcoholic to choose from. The available merch for purpose was neatly put on display and the area was well-lit.
When the band came on stage, the crowd became immediately hyped. The front row to the stage was
pretty packed, and not too long after, people were moving around, headbanging and dancing. Throughout the show, Hippie Death Cult kept the crowd engaged and demonstrated great skill and synchronicity.
Speaking on a technical level, Laura’s vocals were on point. If you compare their mixes to their live sound, I would say she sounded even better in person. Throughout the whole performance she maintained an impressive amount of control with her tonality, breath support, and she did not miss with her fries or grits either. Her bass groove was also very noteworthy. Playing an instrument in conjunction with singing is an incredibly difficult task for many, and she made it look effortless. You could really tell their drummer was really into what he was doing as well. I especially enjoyed watching him, and the amount of headbanging was satisfactory. Their
guitarist delivered plenty of impressive and clean riffs, going from slower “chilled out” vibes to melodic,
fast paced and seamless ones. The way that the guitars, drum and bass all worked together instead of against each other or fighting for the spotlight, in my opinion, really pulled the show together.
Hippie Death Cult had some moments where the music was slower, however the ways in which they coordinated their instruments made for something that felt more mesmerizing rather than low energy. There were points in the show where I ended up putting my camera down to close my eyes and fully absorb what was happening. If I wasn’t taking photos or closing my eyes to enjoy the hypnotic sounds, I was dancing along to the beat without even realizing it.

If there is anything constructive I could say about Hippie Death Cult’s performance, I would say that their stage presence could use a bit of fine tuning. However, given the smaller size of the venue and stage, it could have very well made that a bit more challenging so take what I said with a grain of salt. That aside, you could tell that they loved being there as the glistening eyes and smiles on HDC’s faces were an undeniable indicator. The people enjoyed them just as much. Their all around sound was crisp, and it’s no wonder that they had a good turnout. I would recommend keeping your eyes on this band, and checking out one of their shows if you are situated in any of the cities they’ll be hitting.
