Popping Off With Pop Punk!

Support the Scene had the opportunity to send one of our incredibly talented photographers to see Kites on Mars, Danger Box, The Interrogation and Rong on January 24th, at 648 Kingsway. Here's what Jade Weekes had to say about the venue and the fantastic performance that these bands put on.

There are a few underground venues around Vancouver, but one of my favorites is 648 Kingsway. It's perfectly hidden and you almost need a guide to find the entrance. But once you do, you're welcomed like family by the staff and get to see some of the best bands in Vancouver.

Kites On Mars opened up the night with their Emo/Pop Rock/Alt Rock songs that got the crowd dancing and bopping. Kites On Mars was playing a stripped-down version of their songs but managed to connect with the growing crowd. Having just released their new single "Muffins", they were well-practiced and sounded great. Interestingly enough, their last two songs, one of which was Muffins, had a very different vibe than their other songs. The cleaner guitar seemed to allow the vocals to cut through better and produce a more dynamic sound.

Danger Box was up next and continues to give me hope for the next generation of pop punk. Truly masters of their craft for being their age and put on a killer show as usual. Their crowd of rabid fans were moshing and headbanging like it was going out of style. Even with a few technical difficulties they still managed to rock the crowd to the core. I cant wait to see them write some new songs and break out of the Vancouver Scene.

It was my first time seeing The Interrogation perform a full set, and they did not disappoint! Lots of energy and a very tight sound. The instruments were so loud that the vocals were pinned in the PA systems so the vocals were very gritty and distorted so it was hard to hear any actual words even during their ballad. Some really cool guitar harmony points and some great lead work and solos that would make any guitar-loving fan drool!

Rong closed the night down with a master class of punk rock goodness. Each riff sounded massive and the drums and bass were so tight that the band sounded thicker than any of the bands before. Catchy songs and great vocals had people singing along and a massive moshpit in the middle of the crowd! A perfect way to end such a great night. Ending perfectly at the 11 o'clock sound curfew.
