Show Review - Alien Weaponry, Municipal Waste, and Kerry King

Support the Scene had the opportunity to send one of our incredibly talented photographers to see Alien Weaponry, Municipal Waste, and Kerry King on January 20th, at The Commodore Ballroom. Here's what Danielle Ravenheart & Justin Waterhouse had to say about the venue and the incredible performance that these bands put on.

On Monday evening, we had the honour of reviewing and photographing the Kerry King concert at The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, BC. At the venue, the line was quite long before doors even opened. When they opened, fans rushed to the barricade and within minutes, it was a full venue. When Justin went for a quick restroom break, all he could hear was how excited fans were for the bands to play.

The first band to play was Alien Weaponry. The intro to their show was quite different from what we normally see; instead of everyone walking in at different times, the spotlight was on their drummer, who kept making faces at the crowd, which riled everyone up quickly. Within the first few songs, he threw two sticks into the crowd. Although some vocals were hard to understand, the interesting noises being made added a unique charm that you don’t find in many bands nowadays. We will also say, their guitarist was beast level.

Guitarist of the band Municipal Waste playing under blue lights at the Commodore Ballroom on January 20thThe next band to play was Municipal Waste, which we will describe as an incredibly pleasant
surprise. The way their show started was 0-100; the energy was immaculate. Fans blew up balloons and were throwing them around the venue, and we loved how whenever they made it to the stage, that the band would throw them back… Except for the biggest balloon, which got killed by their guitarist. We also enjoyed how interactive they were with the crowd, and they even cracked some jokes on stage.

The final act to come up was Kerry King. At this point, the fans at the barricade started getting antsy, eagerly awaiting for the show to begin. Some of them even asked the photographers to take photos of the setlist. Kerry King played flawlessly throughout the whole set, a clear reminder that his legendary status shall always be there. There were even some points where the best

way to describe his playing was brain tickling. Phil Demmel’s guitar playing was also very noteworthy, and didn’t miss. Vocalist Mark Osegueda had a very impressive range and was able to exert complete control over his high registers, as well as effortlessly add grit. We also appreciated how Kyle

Sanders’ bass was fully
compatible with the guitar, and we both feel that the one who really pulled everything together was their drummer, Paul Ostaph. The only way to describe him is inhuman; we couldn’t believe that he was able to maintain his energy throughout the show.

In the end, we feel like it was a very good show and while at the end as some fans expressed they wish there were more Slayer tracks, they never expressed any disappointment, and everyone, ourselves included, seemed very impressed by the show.
