Q: For those who don’t know you, can you please introduce yourself and describe your sound?
Hey! I’m Kevin, and I make what I like to call cinematic throwback pop under the name Camellia Grove.
Camellias are my favourite flower. They bloom in early spring and can be found all over Vancouver! In a way, Camellia Grove is the name I’ve given to my hometown.
The music I make is heavily inspired by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, U2, and the Killers, and in my songs I strive for that unrelenting stadium-sized energy. I write, record, and produce out of my home in East Van.
Q: What’s one of the biggest successes you’ve had as a musician?
Going by effort and ticket sales alone, I’d say hosting my album release show for Past Lives at the Cobalt early last year. But every show feels like an achievement, because I get a little stronger at performing each time I do it.Q: What’s your favourite venue to play?
Any stage where the lights are bright and I’m standing above the audience. It really helps with the nerves to be able to look over the crowd and not be at eye level for the whole set. The distance helps me get into the moment and give a more emotional performance.Q: What do you think was the best Medium for music to be on? (Vinyl, Tape, CD, Digital)?
If I’m listening to anything upbeat I want it in my headphones. Digital is the only way to go when I’m on the move or even just cleaning the apartment. With chill music though it’s vinyl all the way. I don’t think the tactile experience and quality of vinyl will ever go out of style. Nothing beats chilling out on the couch with a record on.
Q: Who is your favourite local band to see perform around town?
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Devours more than anyone else at this point. The Vancouver scene is so huge and talented I could probably pick a show at random and know I’m gonna have a good time. More people need to take a chance on seeing smaller acts!Q: What’s coming up next for your music?
