Q: For those who don’t know you, can you please introduce yourself and describe your sound?

Sure! I'm Dave Barroqueiro, and together with Cliff Thiessen and Mike Kott, we're The Getmines - a three-piece hard n' heavy rock band from Vancouver, BC (by way of New Westminster, that is). We've been at it since 2013, and, I suppose to be expected, our sound has evolved over the years. Whereas we began as a kind-of shithousin' trash-punk band in the early days, our sound has definitely become more refined, tighter, and heavier over the years, while retaining the much of the speed, intensity, and bombast of those first days. Admittedly, our mutual affinity for Kyuss/QOTSA and Fu Manchu-esque riff-rock shows a lot more now than it once did: imagine if hair metal hadn't been obliterated by grunge in the early 90s, and instead, became unlikely bedfellows, doing Dead Kennedys covers while on a shit-ton of shrooms.

Q: What’s one of the biggest successes you’ve had as a musician?

Wow - this is such a tough one to answer. Despite having been at it as long as we have, and enjoying victories big and small along the way, I might have to say being selected to play Electric Highway in Calgary in April 2024 - without really realizing it at the time, things really began to pick up steam for us way faster than anything I think we'd done before that. It's like, after ten years of stops-and-starts, we finally announced our arrival! We've made so many new and great friends this last year, and, it all kinda started to unfold there for us.

Q: What’s your favourite venue to play?

Rickshaw. Rickshaw. Rickshaw. We've played there a few times, and I tell ya: for a small-ish band like us, nothing in the world makes you feel more like a rockstar than gracing that stage. The set up is undeniably professional and their people (shout out to Mo!) are second-to-none; it's a true jewel of the city. That said, we love a barn-burner at smaller venues like Lanalou's and Bully's too - I think that's where you can see The Getmines in their greasiest, rawest form.

Outside of the Vancouver area, we really dig the Hub in Penticton (unbelievably great sound, and wonderful people), and don't sleep on Trickster's Hideout in Squamish - it's a real feast for the eyes, that spot.

Q: What do you think was the best Medium for music to be on? (Vinyl, Tape, CD, Digital)?

At the risk of coming across cliche, nothing beats the warmth and fullness of vinyl - it was our aim to have one of our own one day, and sure enough, we done did it!

Q: Who is your favourite local band to see perform around town?

Ah, man, that is way too hard of a question to answer with a single response, so I gotta cop out a bit, and just give you a (totally inexhaustive) list: Bort, Space Queen, The Fomites, Rebel Priest, Gadfly, Bloodrhine/Black Wiz, Anciients, Dead Quiet, Zen Junkie... shit, it just goes on-and-on. An embarassment of riches in this town.

BUUUT, special mention gotta go out to the homies The Flannel Contract (Penticton), Pharm (Kelowna), Sweetbeast (Kelowna), and Under the Mountain (Nanaimo) in BC, and Buffalo Bud Buster, Woodhawk, and Owls & Eagles out of southern Alberta. All mindblowing musicians, all just absolute beauties.

Q: What’s coming up next for your music?

I'm glad you asked! We're super excited for our next show in Vancouver at The Waldorf on February 7th! We're playing with Space Queen, Rebel Priest, and the Hairy Cherries (dream-come-true lineup, I know!) for the release of our first vinyl, Gold & Silver. It's themed the Hard Rock Disco, and it's gonna pop off! Aside from that, we'll be announcing a few more little rips into BC and Alberta throughout the spring and beyond, so stay tuned!!!
