Vancouver's Drag Superstar Showdown! Week 3 Recap
Frequently the music scene and the arts scene overlap, and one of the more spectacular examples of that are drag performances. This year TFD Presents is back to host the 12th year of Vancouver's Next Drag Superstar! Support the Scene was given the opportunity to come out and shoot the show on Feb 13th, and we decided to give you a recap of what went down during week 3's performances.
It was VILLIANS week! The night started with a runway, with each contestant portraying an iconic villain. We had killer looks from everyone but some of the highlights were Gollum, Dr Drakken, and Jigsaw. After the runway, it was the first group challenge! The contestants were split into two groups and each had to put together a number to remember! The first group had a killer concept of a sort of Big Brother house TV show but with evil villains. Each performer had a time to shine and then the whole group busted some serious dance moves. The whole number was very polished and everyone did a great job at pulling their weight.
The second group brought a different flavor. Instead of focusing on a cohesive concept they focused more on the dynamics between characters and really had fun with different interactions during the number. The dance moves weren't as polished as the first group but each of them played their characters so well that you hardly noticed.
Closing the night was the solo performances. Each had their villain, but this was the time for them to give them a new outfit and really show the audience the darkest evilest drag numbers possible. This week was WILD with everything from sex toys emerging from holes, to giant bat wings arising from behind the judges's heads. But, what stole the night, and won them "voters choice" was Sis Gender playing the Black Swan. Showing off their amazing ballet skills they really blew the audience away with the feeling and depth in their performance. At the end of it all, Jigsaw sashayed away, to torture another day.
