Battle of the Bands comes in many varieties, some offer you some prize money, and some offer you opportunities to work with professionals in their field. But rarely does a competition offer you a chance at something so game-changing as the Wacken Battle Of The Bands. Wacken Open Air is a heavy metal music festival held annually since 1989 in Germany. And if you win the Canadian Wacken Metal Battle, you can play that massive festival.  This year Vancouver has some amazing bands fighting for their spot to represent our city in the Wacken Metal Battle. I'll be having a quick chat with each band about their thoughts going into this show on SATURDAY, March 1st! Don't Miss it!                                         ...

Vancouver's Drag Superstar Showdown! Week 4 Recap

Image
Frequently the music scene and the arts scene overlap, and one of the more spectacular examples of that are drag performances. This year  TFD Presents  is back to host the 12th year of  Vancouver's Next Drag Superstar ! Support the Scene was given the opportunity to come out and shoot the show on Feb 20th, and we decided to give you a recap of what went down during the semi final's performances.   ♪ ♫ ♪    This week they were quick to proceed into the show, rolling immediately into everyone's favorite competition: the lip sync battles. Michelangela was stunning in a dark blue sequined bodysuit, with gorgeous plumes of bright orange feathers coming off various points. Clem also looked stunning in a light blue rhinesto...

The Age Of The Venue... Is Gone

Image
I believe the age of “the venue” is gone. Died out. Gone extinct like the dinosaurs before it. CDs, Band Websites, and now…  Medium-sized Venues.

I'm not saying that all venues are dead. Lord knows that touring acts are still coming through towns and selling out theatres and stadiums. People, for whatever reason, are okay with paying $200-god-knows-what to get a ticket to sit in the nosebleeds and see their artists perform on a giant screen, because all you can see is a speck of a person on the stage. Thankfully, larger venues like theatres and halls are still selling tickets for touring acts. Hopefully allowing local artists to open up, but nowadays, that opportunity is even less plentiful, and almost more of a pay-to-play as far as opening up for touring bands.  But asking a local band to sell 300-500 tickets... I don’t know many “local” bands that could. And those that I do know, are used to playing bigger stages, but are only considered local because they grew up here. A...

One DUSTY Birthday!

Image
Dust Cwaine is an icon around Vancouver. Having spent years nurturing the Drag Scene in East Van, and now pushing into the music scene and leaving one hell of a mark! From dabbling in making music, to having a full band and a full set list of amazing original tunes, to playing a sold-out birthday show and having the whole crowd sing along to their music.      With musical performances from Kylie V, Jody Glenham, Hazel and Dust's own band, as well as Drag performances from Acacia Gray, Pickle Spears, and Nora Vision. Topping it all off with Burlesque from Rainbow Glitz, and a speech from Shanda Leer (Dust's Drag Mom). It was a packed night full of magic and wonder.  Every performer brought their own unique quirky performances and it was such a fun mix of various genres and art types; one that I believe more shows should strive to model their nights after. Many had a duet moment with Dust, and it was so much fun to see them all tell stories (some more embarrass...

The hunt is on for Vancouver's Next Drag Superstar ! We managed to chat with a few of this week's revealed contestants. Come out Feb 6th to Celebrities Nightclub, as well as for the next few weeks, to see who makes it to the finals. Introducing: Carrie Oki Doki           1. I would describe my drag as campy vintage glamour with lots of exaggeration.            2. What’s your go-to song to perform if you were trapped on a desert island and had to lip sync for your life to escape?
Macarthur Park by Nancy Sinatra.           3. Which guest judge are you most looking forward to performing in front of? All of them!           4. What do you think separates you from other Drag performers in Vancouver? Being early or on time (most of the time) and making almost all my costumes myself. ...

How would you describe your drag to someone who’s never seen you before?
Sis, Gender’s Drag is all about breaking boundaries and celebrating the fluidity of gender. It’s unexpected, bold, and unapologetically individual. My performances are a mix of raw energy, a touch of humour, and a lot of heart—meant to inspire everyone to feel confident in living life by their own rules, no matter what the world expects of them.            2. What’s your go-to song to perform if you were trapped on a desert island and had to lip sync for your life to escape?
If I had to choose, I’d go with “Freedom! ’90” by George Michael. It’s a song that celebrates...

My drag is very trashy, punk, trailer park, party girl with a side of bimbo. Non-chalant, un-serious, good time gal!            2. What’s your go-to song to perform if you were trapped on a desert island and had to lip sync for your life to escape?
I do Jessica Simpsons "I Wanna Love you Forever" a lot, and I've done "Black Velvet" often, 'cause rolling around the floor is fun, haha. I'm kind of a slow, sexy song kinda gal, haha.           3. Which guest judge are you most looking forward to performing in front of? Probably Kendal, 'cause we knew each o...
